Ilmu pengetahuan atau sains ternyata punya metode latihan yang bisa membuat kemampuan kita lebih sempurna, gaes. Selama ini, kamu mungkin cuma mengenal istilah “practice makes perfect”. Yaitu, jika kamu terus melatih kemampuan secara berulang-ulang, maka akan terlihat hasilnya. Semakin banyak waktu yang kamu curahkan dalam sehari untuk latihan, kemampuanmu bakal meningkat.

Namun, teori 'practice makes perfect' juga mendapat kritik. Menurut K. Anderson, seorang psikolog dan profesor di bidang new science, latihan yang berulang-ulang bikin kamu butuh waktu lebih lama untuk menjadi seorang ahli di bidang tertentu.

Misalnya begini, kamu belajar bermain gitar terus menerus. Setiap hari kamu berlatih dengan gitar tersebut. Tentu aja kamu bakal semakin jago, tapi, kamu butuh waktu lama untuk menjadi seorang ahli kalau hanya mengulang-ulang lagu yang sama. Justru kuncinya adalah “deliberate practice” alias latihan yang santai tapi penuh perhitungan.

Apa, sih, “deliberate practice” itu?

Deliberate practice adalah bentuk latihan yang percaya bahwa setiap sesi latihan nggak bisa diciptakan secara sama. Mengulang sesuatu terus menerus emang bakal bikin kita terbiasa dengan hal tersebut tapi nggak lantas membuat kita berkembang.

Deliberate practice mengedepankan latihan dengan niat yang jelas sejak awal. Maka, kalau tujuannya jelas, perhitungan waktu dan langkah dalam sesi latihanpun bakal lebih kongkrit dan efektif. Kita latihan dengan goal yang jelas kapan kita akan berada di titik tertentu.

Untuk melatih “deliberate practice”, kamu bisa melakukan cara-cara berikut:

Nggak takut gagal

Dalam sebuah pidato kelulusan Universitas Harvard, penulis novel Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling’s bilang kegagalan sangat berkontribusi buat kesuksesannya. Kegagalan bikin Rowling mencari cara lain untuk mewujudkan mimpinya.

Hal ini juga didukung dengan penelitian New York Times yang bilang bahwa kebanyakan orang sukses berani mencoba berbagai cara you, dibanding terus-menerus mengulang yang jadi keahlian mereka.

Satu hal dalam satu waktu

Jangan berlatih apapun sekaligus. Cobalah satu hal sampai bisa dalam satu waktu tertentu. Misalnya, kamu suka sekali menari. Maka kuasailah satu jenis tarian dalam jangka waktu yang udah kamu tentukan. Begitu sudah menguasainya, baru kamu bisa lanjut ke jenis tarian lain.

Buat rencana yang jelas. Misalnya, dalam satu atau dua sesi latihan kamu harus bisa menguasai gerakan dasar, dan seterusnya.

Berguru lah dengan orang yang tepat

Kalau kamu mencoba menjadi ahli di bidang tertentu, berlatih otodidak nggak ada salahnya. Tapi, akan lebih baik lagi kalau kamu berusaha untuk berguru ke orang yang tepat. Misalnya, kamu ingin menguasai bahasa Spanyol, kamu bisa aja sih belajar sendiri lewat kamus. Tapi cobalah menabung untuk menyewa guru les.

Mentor atau guru yang tepat akan membantu kamu supaya lebih fokus dan punya target yang terarah.

Set perkembangan yang pasti

Nggak masalah kalau kamu adalah tipe pembelajar yang lama alias butuh bersesi-sesi latihan cuma untuk menguasai suatu hal. Yang penting, hasilnya terukur. Misalnya, kalau kamu pengen menjadi atlet lari, nggak perlu ngoyo langsung bisa lari 10 kilometer dalam satu sesi latihan. Namun usahakan punya target tertentu kayak nafas kamu lebih panjang, kekuatan kaki kamu lebih baik dan seterusnya.

Kebiasaan untuk bikin goal yang spesifik (kalau bisa berupa angka) membantu kemampuan kamu berkembang secara sempurana.
